An
opening to the installation Brobdingnag
Swift’s friend George Berkeley
who wrote An Essay towards a New Theory of vision (1709)
inspired Swift for two of the four islands Lemuel Gulliver stranded.
Berkley’s theory was that Large and small, slow and fast only exists
in comparison.
“Parrhasios, it is
recorded, entered into a competition with Zeuxis, who produced a
picture of grapes so successfully represented that birds flew up
to the stag buildings [in the theatre, which served at that time
as a public art gallery]; whereupon Parrhasios himself produced such
a realistic picture of a curtain that Zeuxis, proud of the verdict
of the birds, requested that the curtain should now be drawn and
the picture displayed; and when he realized his mistake, with a modesty
that did him honour he yielded up the prize, saying that whereas
he had deceived the birds,
Parrhasios had deceived him, an artist.”
(From Natural History, by
Plinius the Elder, referring to a trompe l'oeil painting in Athens,
5th century B.C.)
The
external box is painted with old style illusion technique: Trompe l'œil
”deceiving the eye” while the inside is made with new style illusion
technique: computer based 3D animations. Two animations with
slightly different angels is projected trough polarized filters. When the spectator
sees the animations trough polarized goggles the image appear in depth Trompe
l'cerveau “deceiving the brain”. To enhance the surroundings
of the illusory world Brobdingnag, sound with 6 channels has been added describing
a forest near the seashore with insects, birds and frogs.
Hyperstereo
and hypostereo
If you make a stereo image with a larger separation between the exposures than our normal binocular view (6.5 cm eye separation) the object seems to be smaller than real life and more plastic, that is if it’s an object that is rather large, like a mountain or a house, even a planet can be visualized with great relief sensation. If you want to visualize narrow space with more depth you would have to make a stereo image with a smaller distance than our fixed eye separation. With this technique surgery can be more exactly, you can give a microscopic view a viewable space.
Who
sees depth and for what use
There
is basically two category of animals that sees the world with depth
namely the primate and the predator. This is to make a fast decision of the distance
and position .

En öppning
till installationen Brobdingnag
Swift’s vän George Berkeley som skrev An Essay
towards a New Theory of vision (1709) inspirerade Swift till två av
de fyra öarna Lemuel Gulliver strandade. Berkley’s teorier
3D animation. De två animationerna som skiljer något
i vinkel projiceras genom två polarisations filter. När åskådaren
betraktar animationerna genom polarisations glasögon framträder
animationen i djup Trompe l'cerveau “Lura hjärnan ”.
